![]() THE FINNISH LITERATURE SOCIETY Founded in 1831, The Finnish Literature Society, a learned and oral history organization, has engaged in a nation-builiding project over the years to enrich Finnish self-understanding, promote Finnish literature by making it better known both in Finland and abroad, and publish a significant portion of Finland’s belles lettres, information and scholarly literature. SKS – a Kronohagen Club A group of young university men met at the home of Carl Niklas Keckman, a lecturer in the Finnish language at the University of Helsinki. Elias Lönnrot wrote in the minutes of the meeting: "And while they were there they began to talk of how the Finnish language could be revived by means of the book. And in the end it turned out that it was easier for the many to work together than the one, and the result of it was the foundation of a Society.” |

![]() THE TOLKIEN SOCIETY The Tolkien Society is an educational charity, literary society, and international fan club, devoted to promoting the life and works of J.R.R. Tolkien. The Society was founded in 1969 and received the blessing of Tolkien himself when he agreed to become the Society’s president; he remains the Society’s president to this day whilst his daughter, Priscilla, serves as the Vice-President. Although based in the U. K., the Society has hundreds of members in dozens of countries around the world who hold local events in their areas and who all receive the Society’s journals Amon Hen and Mallorn. What binds all members together is a shared passion for the works of J.R.R. Tolkien |

![]() CHILLI DEVILS @ THE NEW CLARENCE The regular meeting venue for the Eastfarthing Smial. Eastfarthing Smial meets here on the 2nd Sunday of every month. Why here? Ian, the landlord strives tirelessly for this community pub. Both the pub and Ian are all welcoming, serving great food with regularly updated great ales, ciders and other drinks. As you've guessed, Ian specialises in his own home-made chillis, right from growing his own plants! Food and drink is available during the Eastfarthing Smial moots. Music is a big part of this venue which will feature local bands ranging from folk to rock. Eastfarthing Smial moots regularly have a folk ambience supplied by local artists. And not forgetting regular local history talks provided by the great @HullTourGuide, Paul Schofield. |
